JM#122 – Christian Engh

Christian Engh is a truly eclectic musical soul. He’s played in metal bands, he’s produced surging House for Full Pupp, and domineering Techno for Rett i Fletta and can be found playing the absolute limits of the Techno genre in and around Oslo. When he’s not in the booth, he’s on the dance floor or in the studio.

After appearing on a split EP on Full Pupp in 2015 with “Kyllingsmak” he  followed it up with a 12″ on the Techno-leaning  Rett i Fletta label, also out of the Prins Thomas musical enclave. The “Snurrbass” Ep toughened up Engh’s nascent sound as a fully-fledged Techno artist in a sonic signature that accompanies him in the booth today.

He makes his debut on the Jæger mix with a selection that lives in the salacious, seedy corners, buried deep in Techno. Engh favours an unapologetic reserved approach, provoking an unsuspecting audience into action with thunderous four-four beats and unsettling sonic textures. It’s a mix constructed like a concrete bunker, resolute, firm and completely unreserved. This one bites back…

Give us an introduction

I’m Christian from Oslo, and I’ve dabbled in electronic music since the ’90s.

What is your earliest memory of a piece of music?

It’s blurry, but I’m pretty sure it was a lullaby.

What sound or genre do you feel represents what you try to do through your selections?

For this mix, dark, dirty and hypnotic techno.

What do you consider your role as DJ should be?

The one hour format of Æmix made me think about old tape and CD mixes. They often seemed to me like little stories, and I wanted to try and do something like that for the Æmix.

What was the theme of your mix?

Approaching winter solstice in Oslo.

Which track in your Æmix best represents the theme of your mix and why?

Denise Rabe – Before I Fall. The track has a deliberate, unrushed pace, and the resonant pattern of the bass is just magnificent.

What do you hope your Æmix relays to the listener?

I hope you enjoy the selection of old and new tracks!

What’s next for you after this mix?

I’m picking up a kick drum machine from the post office tomorrow, and I have a new 12″ coming out on Rett i Fletta fairly soon.
